The National Metals Technology Centre (NAMTEC) joined the AMRC with Boeing in 2012 after providing services to the UK manufacturing supply chain for several years. As the metals research group of the AMRC, our work in powder metallurgy is focused on materials and processes for metal additive manufacturing.

We conduct projects in the areas of:

Powder characterisation – understanding the materials to help predict and control their performance in powder metallurgy processes

Powder metallurgy processing technologies – exploring and optimising the capabilities of powder bed and blown powder additive manufacturing powders

Additionally our Microscopy Laboratory is a UKAS accredited testing facility for studying the effects of manufacturing processes on the surface integrity of materials.

Our facilities include:

  • Specialist Powder Characterisation Laboratory
  • Renishaw AM250 powder bed metal additive machine
  • Optomec LENS MR-7 blown powder metal additive machine
  • Fully equipped Microscopy Laboratory, including SEM
