RAeS Lecture: Evolution of the Revolution

30 January 2018 - 30 January 2018

Evolution of the Revolution
Guest speaker: Barry Jones
Managing Director, Chimera Aviation

The Autogyro has been described as ‘aviations best kept secret’ but what is the secret? Most people have seen ‘autorotation’ in their lives if not though the knowledge that ‘autorotation’ is designed in to all helicopters as the ultimate safety measure should the helicopter suffer a serious technical failure, then possibly as a child at school watching the Sycamore Seeds spin their way to earth. They have probably seen ‘Little Nellie’ from the James Bond film, ‘You Only Live Twice’ and possibly have seen the rapid growth of Sport Autogyros in the UK and across Europe but, what is the secret?

The Autogyro is not just ‘a stepping stone on the way to the development of the helicopter’ but an aircraft type in its own right. Not only this, but the Autogyro is the definition of Cost & Capability and from a military or para-military/police standpoint it is a true ‘force multiplier’. With the benefit of being an experienced military pilot, a man manager and an equipment manager, and having been charged with delivering 24 hour operations to the most professional military in the world, Barry is working to educate people as to the capability of this hidden gem, the Autogyro.
