A signed copy of the Environmental Policy Statement (AMRC.EP) is displayed in each reception area and on the AMRC and AMRC Training Centre’s website.
The University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) helps manufacturers of any size to become more competitive by supporting the introduction of advanced techniques, technologies and processes.
We specialise in carrying out world-leading research into advanced machining, manufacturing and materials, which is of practical use to industry and supports companies in manufacturing better, faster, more efficient, economical and environmentally conscious products.
The AMRC Training Centre provides engineering apprenticeships for more than 300 employers across the Sheffield region (and beyond) since it’s opening in 2013. It also offers Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and training courses for various industries.
We recognise the environmental challenges resulting from human interaction with the environment and understand the specific environmental impacts of our operation. We are dedicated to minimising negative environmental impacts and working towards net environmental benefit resulting from our activity whilst supporting sustainable development and meeting our environmental obligations.
At a local level we have invested in on-site renewable energy and energy saving technologies. The aim is to ensure that a significant proportion of our work is driven by the need to reduce environmental impact. As a result, outputs may include core or peripheral benefits of reducing waste and/or energy use in manufacturing therefore reducing the impact of a finished product or service.
We are committed to understanding, controlling, and improving the overall impact of the AMRC’s and the AMRC Training Centre’s operations on the environment. The AMRC’s and the AMRC Training Centre’s environmental management system (EMS) has been developed and is being continually improved with the aim being to assure:
- Compliance with all legal and other requirements and to maintain certification to ISO 14001.
- Prevention of pollution, resulting from any AMRC and AMRC Training Centre activity.
- Compliance with, and support towards the University of Sheffield’s Environmental Policy and net-zero commitments.
- Efficient use of resources, including energy, water, and materials.
- Responsible management of waste, with consideration of the waste hierarchy.
- Considerate approaches to travel and transport in relation to AMRC and AMRC Training Centre activity.
- Continual improvement of our environmental performance.
- Methods are provided by which staff can be consulted and informed of changes to the EMS and can contribute to the ongoing improvement of the system and controls in place.
We achieve this by:
- Establishing an Environmental policy which is reviewed regularly and shared with all personnel and interested parties.
- Providing suitable facilities, equipment, resources and information to allow all personnel to undertake their day-to-day roles whilst meeting their obligations under this policy.
- Maintaining and sharing data as appropriate to illustrate environmental performance, and to demonstrate our commitment to continuous improvement.
- Identifying and routinely reviewing objectives to improve the environmental performance of the organisation and offer the greatest outcomes based on cost to benefit ratio.
- Undertaking appropriate checks and maintenance on all equipment to ensure efficient operation and minimising the chance of environmental incidents.
- Emphasising to all employees their environmental responsibilities when at work, providing appropriate training, ensuring continuing development of environmental awareness, promoting an environmentally considerate culture (incl. running a quarterly Environmental Working Group) and providing communication paths between staff and the environmental, health and safety team.
- Frequently reviewing the Environmental Management System through internal and external audit, management review and pro-active feedback to ensure its ongoing effectiveness and appropriateness.
- Committing to become a net-zero carbon organisation while reducing absolute carbon emissions.
