Take the risk out of large-scale manufacturing
Manufacturing large-scale components can be high-risk. When parts are this big, the cost of a single mistake isn't just measured in materials - it’s measured in lost time and capital. For industry leaders and supply chain partners, the barrier to innovation is often the sheer scale of the risk involved.
At the AMRC, we provide the unique facilities and pioneering research needed to take the uncertainty out of large-scale production. We move beyond just making things bigger to focus on how you can produce low-volume, high-value parts right first time, in the quickest most efficient way possible
A complete solution all in one place
We are equipped to meet the special requirements of large-scale manufacturing in everything from energy to aerospace. Our fabrication work covers subtractive machining, joining and cladding technologies, high temperature vacuum furnaces for ceramics, near net shape and assurance.
- Complete end-to-end support: Our unique facility brings together expertise and capabilities from machining and welding to design, fixtures and inspection.
- Benefit from the latest knowledge: We can take our knowledge from pioneering projects like small nuclear reactors and apply it to your specific industrial challenges, ensuring you benefit from the latest systems insight.
- Confidence through compliance: We work with regulators to ensure your innovations meet the strict requirements of highly regulated sectors like energy and aerospace.
Proven outcomes in action
We produce advanced manufacturing research and development on a larger scale than anywhere else in the UK.
- Revolutionising nuclear energy: We’re working with Rolls-Royce SMR to develop small modular reactors (SMRs). By moving nuclear production into a factory setting, we are creating a major change in how the industry saves time and reduces costs.
- Drastic time reduction: Working with the US Department of Energy, we applied our welding expertise to reduce the production time on pressure vessels from 538 hours to less than six - a clear example of how our research translates into real-world impact.
- Supply chain resilience: We work with smaller companies across the country to help them enter the large-scale manufacturing market, providing the proof and reassurance they need to showcase the UK as a global leader.
Key capabilities
We have expertise in advanced joining technologies and some of the largest welding research facilities in the world. Our research ranges from the latest power beam and arc welding techniques to using AI to improve traceability and manufacturing speed. In our work with the US Department of Energy on nuclear pressure vessels we reduced the welding time from 538 hours to less than six.
In our South Yorkshire facilities we can develop advanced techniques for the whole process of large-scale manufacturing, all in one place. We are distinct in the world to offer both sub-scale and full-scale automation. This ability to manufacture demonstrator components at full scale means that we can solve real-world manufacturing challenges and test new processes before they are rolled out in industry.
We have been working on the digital thread for over ten years and are at the forefront of designing and using digital tools for manufacturing. We work with a number of partners including software providers to develop new technology and digitise assembly techniques and methods of manufacture — all to make your products cheaper, faster and cleaner.
Safety and assurance runs through everything we do. We work with international bodies to contribute to the codes and standards used globally to regulate nuclear production. By demonstrating new techniques and technology to regulators, we help them stay on top of new developments in large-scale manufacturing — and allow you to innovate without unexpected blockages down the line.
Make fabrication work for your business
We work with companies of all sizes to maximise their potential and ensure a robust supply chain in this country. Each major project we work on, such as the new generation of small modular reactors, provides a wealth of procurement opportunities for companies across the country. We can help you act quickly to capture your own part of the growing global market in new forms of energy.
Our independence, our deep knowledge of large-scale manufacturing in the UK, and our vast network of industrial partners means we are in a uniquely strong position to help your business understand the future needs of UK manufacturing — and play your part in delivering it.
