What happens when ambitious entrepreneurial vision meets world-class engineering innovation? You get AMRC FerretWorks:Startup.

This initiative is designed to bridge the gap between bright ideas and commercial reality. Co-funded in its first year by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) and the University of Sheffield, the programme helps early-stage founders develop their products and build scalable, sustainable businesses.

Originally featured in the AMRC Journal, we sat down with Richard Gardiner, senior innovation fellow at the AMRC, to explain how this project specifically supports and grows early-stage engineering innovation across our region.

The challenge

Early-stage innovation is inherently vulnerable. For many entrepreneurs with brilliant engineering concepts, the journey from a working prototype to a commercially viable, investable venture is blocked by significant barriers.

Founders frequently struggle to access the advanced, high-value manufacturing equipment required to test and refine their ideas. Without technical backing, engineering expertise, and a clear commercial framework, even the most promising ideas risk stalling before they ever reach the market.

Furthermore, national frameworks—such as the UK government’s Independent Review of University Spin-outs—have explicitly highlighted a critical gap: early-stage founders need more structured support at the proof-of-concept stage, deeper integration between academia and industry, and improved access to funding and technical resources to keep their innovations from failing early on.

What we're doing

AMRC FerretWorks: Startup meets these regional and national challenges head-on by de-risking innovation at its most critical point. We are providing early-stage founders with a structured, joined-up pathway that combines world-class technical capabilities with vital investment networks.

Ultimately, selected participants are awarded project support worth up to £45,000 to co-develop their innovations directly alongside our expert engineering teams.

Here is how the programme is actively driving change:

Providing access to £200 million of advanced capability

Through the project, participants work shoulder-to-shoulder with specialist AMRC engineers to refine their ideas and accelerate their route to market. They gain access to more than £200 million of advanced manufacturing capability—spanning everything from design for manufacture and product testing to state-of-the-art machinery and technical expertise.

Connecting the regional ecosystem

The programme targets high-potential startups in sectors of national strategic importance, including aerospace, energy, defence, automotive, construction, medical, space, food and drink, agri-tech, and rail. To find and support these innovators, we have partnered with three key commercialisation entry points:

  • The Royal Academy of Engineering’s Regional Talent Engine (Yorkshire): Helping talented entrepreneurs build commercialisation skills and critical networks.
  • Sheffield Technology Parks’ Cooper Project: Incubating early-stage founders to accelerate them from the idea stage to a scalable product.
  • The University of Sheffield’s Commercialisation Journey: Identifying promising research and technical ideas ready to transition from academia to industry.
