Circular MedTech: Rethinking Product Design
26 February 2026 - 26 February 2026This webinar will focus on the evidence base to steer different value creation through new MedTech product design.
Led by EPSRC-funded Digital Enabled Circular Healthcare Innovation research project (DECHI), this webinar explores how evidence can guide value creation in new MedTech product design, using the case example of developing a safer device for dispensing liquid medicines.
Prompted by investor concerns about introducing another plastic product into the market, BioPhys partnered with the University of Sheffield AMRC to conduct detailed Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) work. This analysis uncovered important insights about material choice, durability and overall design - ultimately leading to a redesigned device with a significantly lower environmental impact.
Dr Jing Pu (University of Sheffield AMRC), Dr Jin Ding (University of Exeter), and James Preece (BioPhys) will discuss how this evidence shaped BioPhys’s commercial decisions, and how circular design drivers revealed opportunities for competitive advantage, including the potential to develop higher‑quality, more durable products.
Looking ahead, Roger Singleton (Riskoa) will share emerging advances in LCA analysis, including the use of AI to accelerate data collection, modelling and reporting opening new possibilities for faster, more informed product development.
