Manufacture & Materials for Fission & Fusion Net-zero 2025

12 November 2025 - 12 November 2025

Committed to the success of the nuclear and energy sectors, the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) is proud to sponsor the "Manufacture & Materials for Fission & Fusion - Net-zero 2025" conference.

This vital one-day conference will bring together leading experts from industry and academia to address the significant materials and fabrication challenges facing the future of nuclear power in the UK and globally.

Event Overview

The UK's strategy for energy security and net-zero carbon emissions heavily relies on nuclear power for decades to come. This includes existing technologies alongside the exciting development of small modular reactors (SMRs), advanced high-temperature fission reactors, and fusion power plants. This innovation is supported by strong UK government funding for R&D.

The imperative to ensure the safety and integrity of components designed to operate for 60+ years in some of the most challenging service conditions on the planet—while simultaneously controlling cost—is driving a critical need for significant innovation in materials and their manufacture.

What You Will Gain

This conference is a dedicated forum for professionals to share experience, highlight current challenges, and discuss potential solutions across various reactor concepts. Promote your understanding of the behaviour of high-temperature structural materials with a view to improving both their reliability and performance in service.

Presentation Topics Will Cover:

  • Performance of existing materials in the nuclear industry.
  • Materials being developed for the range of new nuclear power generation technologies (SMRs, advanced fission, and fusion).
  • State-of-the-art manufacturing and fabrication techniques.
  • Materials and structural integrity issues still to be addressed with new nuclear generation technologies.

Who Should Attend?

The target audience is the burgeoning nuclear research and development sector in the UK and overseas, including:

  • Materials Scientists and Engineers working for reactor developers or consultancies.
  • Professionals from Industry, Government Laboratories, and Academia.
  • Organisations outside of the current nuclear industry interested in engaging with this rapidly developing field and understanding the technical challenges and potential innovations.

Organisations involved in this seminar include UKAEA, ONR, Rolls Royce, Amentum, Bristol University, the Nuclear Innovation and Research Office, EDF Energy, Materials Processing Institute, and others.

The University of Sheffield AMRC is committed to driving the innovation necessary for a successful nuclear and energy transition. Join us to be part of the solution for a net-zero future!
