Composite tape manufacturing
SAMPE Europe 25 Conference will be held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands from 6th – 7th October 2025. This international conference will feature over 100 authors presenting latest advances in composites, with special emphasis on thermoplastics, sustainability, automation and artificial intelligence.
Alex Brahinets, AMRC’s development engineer, will present The University of Sheffield AMRC composite centre work on composite tape manufacturing. Unidirectional carbon fibre-reinforced tape was produced from a novel polyimide resin, which has infinite shelf-life at room temperature and can be melted or thermoformed, but also can be cross-linked on demand into a thermoset polymer. This allows to combine benefits of thermoplastics and thermosets, offering both convenient processing as well as high mechanical and thermal resistance.
The AMRC has used a simplified water-based process to impregnate fibre with resin, achieving a consistent high-quality tape with low porosity. The development of this material opens a route to automated manufacturing of polyimide/CF composite parts with Automated Fibre Placement (AFP) and filament winding.
