Engineering Technician - Rebecca Wright

08 March 2021

We're celebrating International Women's Day 2021. The theme this year is #ChooseToChallenge, so we're looking at some of the amazing women who work at the AMRC and AMRC Training Centre who #ChooseToChallenge engineering gender stereotypes every day.

Name: Rebecca Wright

Job title: Engineering Technician

Company: AMRC Training Centre apprentice at the AMRC

Describe your job?

My job is very easy going - I do the tasks that are given but I also have time to focus on my own continuous development.

Tell us about a typical week at work?

My day-to-day job would usually consist of designing robotic components and installing the manufactured design onto the designated robot or cell. I also take part in things such as health and safety, environmental care and health and wellbeing. All of these areas of work help to create a better working environment, which is what I love the most.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in the industry or thinking of a career in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths)?

If you're thinking about it, just do it. Young people have enough time to try anything. It's not the end of the world if it turns out to be something you do not enjoy.

What is it like being a woman in engineering?

Being a woman in engineering is great, however I wouldn't say it is any different to being male. We are all treated equally at the AMRC but we always strive for excellence in this area.

What is your greatest career achievement to date?

My greatest achievement would be winning the Apprentice of the Year Awards for Yorkshire and the Humber which was supported by the Royal Navy in 2019. I also feel like completing my 3 year long apprenticeship whilst receiving distinctions throughout is also one of my greatest achievements.

Why did you choose a career in STEM?

I chose a career in engineering to prove stereotypes wrong, but I also wanted a long term career, somewhere that I could excel and improve in. I'm always looking for new ways to gain extra knowledge.
