How the AMRC and South Yorkshire are transforming UK defence manufacturing

Published:

Defence is a national political priority, demanding a shift in capability and economic dividend. And South Yorkshire is at the forefront of this transformation.

Following the launch of the Yorkshire Regional Defence Security Cluster and the announcement of the landmark South Yorkshire Defence Growth Deal, the two together mark a leap forward for regional industry.

More importantly, it has solidified the critical role of the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) in advancing the UK’s defence sector.

This unified regional momentum represents a powerful statement of intent: South Yorkshire has the capability, ambition and partnerships to strengthen national security, while driving economic growth for the UK.

A shared ambition for UK defence and industrial resilience

The launch of the South Yorkshire Defence Cluster sets out a robust, collaborative platform designed to connect industry, academia, government and regional partners with the purpose of:

  • Strengthening and developing a resilient UK defence industrial base through regional collaboration with defence and security stakeholders;
  • Encouraging innovation and regional growth;
  • Building sustainable partnerships across sectors;
  • Supporting SME engagement and open pathways for non-traditional suppliers;
  • Unlocking commercial opportunities and attracting investments;
  • Influencing national policy and investment decisions from a regional perspective.

The cluster aims to be recognised as a leading defence and security region in the UK through more joined up working and providing an efficient and accessible route for industry to work in defence and security.

From concept to deployable capability: the AMRC’s pivotal role

Defence capability is built on the back of industry, factories and skills.

For the AMRC, the prominence of the UK's defence priorities presents a significant opportunity to scale its impact. Our role is to help translate these priorities into practical manufacturing outcomes.

UK companies, from primes, to SMEs, face the immense challenge of developing, testing and industrialising technologies required for future defence programmes.

As outlined in our latest report, working in advanced materials, automation and digital manufacturing, through to prototyping, secure manufacturing environments and supply chain development, the AMRC is well placed to help industry move faster from concept to deployable capability. It already has a strong track-record of working including Medical Telexistence (MediTel) Technology and Remote Embodied Action and Control Hub (REACH).

Aligning with the government’s Industrial Strategy

This regional surge in defence opportunity is not happening in a vacuum. It aligns directly with the UK Government’s Industrial Strategy, which redefines defence not just as a security necessity, but as an engine for economic growth.

The national strategy focuses heavily on UK-based innovation, procurement reform, industrial resilience and critical support for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs).

Matt Farnsworth, commercial director at the AMRC, said: “Since the release of the government’s industrial strategy last year, we are seeing more alignment between the AMRC’s defence work and what the government is asking for.

“In terms of major programmes we are aligned to, our strategy and sovereign capability, we are leaning into this more strongly. The industrial strategy has provided us with more clarity and power to our elbow that what we are doing here at the AMRC in terms of our defence focus is right.”

Collaborative working: the High Value Manufacturing (HVM) Catapult Defence Alliance

The AMRC isn't working in isolation. As part of the HVM Catapult, the AMRC is integrated into its defence alliance, formed with the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

This network is specifically designed to scale the UK's defence industrial base and protect national interests against emerging global threats. It will also drive the development of dual-use technologies, including advanced materials, artificial intelligence and robotics.

Looking ahead: South Yorkshire as a national defence powerhouse

The launch of the Yorkshire Regional Defence Security Cluster is more than a regional milestone. Backed by the AMRC’s world-class research infrastructure and the financial backing of the Defence Growth Deal, the region is uniquely equipped to deliver tangible impact for the global aerospace, security and defence sectors.

By de-risking innovation for supply chain SMEs and providing major defence contractors with the advanced manufacturing tools they need, the AMRC is ensuring that the future of UK sovereign capability is securely engineered in South Yorkshire.
